PELLIER TAMES SPANISH TARMAC AHEAD OF ERC JUNIOR OUTING
Laurent Pellier warmed up for his next FIA ERC Junior Under 28 Championship appearance with a fine second place on Rallye Sierra Morena in Spain on 14 April. Pellier was using the Córdoba-based event to prepare for the upcoming Rally Islas Canarias. As well as building his experience of his PEUGEOT 208 T16 on asphalt, the Frenchman impressed by beating a host of Spanish championship regulars, including 2017 title winner Iván Ares. AVCIOĞLU UP FOR FULL ERC BID
Orhan Avcioğlu is planning to contest the remaining rounds of this season’s FIA European Rally Championship after graduating to the series for 2018. Last year’s FIA Balkan Rally Trophy winner was in the top 20 on the recent Azores Airlines Rallye when a crash put him out on the final morning. Undeterred, he is set to compete in his ŠKODA Fabia R5 for only the third time when he contests Rally Islas Canarias from 3-5 May. Click here for full story.
ERC JUNIOR KOČI MAKES STRONG START AT HOME
Slovakia’s Martin Koči made a strong start to his national title bid with second place on Rallye Prešov last weekend. He was runner-up to ERC podium finisher, former Polish champion and four-time Slovak title holder Grzegorz Grzyb in a similar ŠKODA Fabia R5. Polish prospect and domestic Group N champion Mikołaj Marczyk completed an all-Fabia podium. Koči is mounting a combined ERC Junior Under 28 and Slovak campaign in a Fabia R5 backed by his country’s ŠKODA importer. Click here for full story.
HABAJ HAPPY WITH ERC POINTS
This season’s FIA European Rally Championship is already proving to be better for Łukasz Habaj than last based on how the Pole has begun his 2018 campaign. After a non-finish and non-start from the first two ERC events in 2017, Habaj finished the season-opening Azores Airlines Rallye in seventh place to register his first points of the year. BIRDMAN ACHIEVES NEW HEIGHTS IN ERC
Hubert Ptaszek, the driver known as Birdman based on a rough English translation of his surname, achieved new heights on his FIA ERC Junior Under 28 Championship debut last month. Although his challenge was undone by an administrative issue that kept him out of Friday’s action, the Pole responded by scoring his first outright stage win courtesy of his quickest time through the Grupo Marques spectator stage on the Azores Airlines Rallye’s final leg. MUNNINGS TOPS ERC LADIES’ TROPHY
Catie Munnings will top the ERC Ladies’ Trophy when battle resumes on Rally Islas Canarias next month. Munnings heads Tamara Molinaro under a new scoring system for 2018 introduced by FIA European Rally Championship promoter Eurosport Events, which is committed to encouraging the participation of women in motorsport and has revamped the ERC Ladies’ Trophy accordingly.
