Kopecký’s respect for Lukyanuk after thrilling ERC duel
The 2013 FIA European Rally Champion Jan Kopecký paid tribute to Alexey Lukyanuk after the pair’s event-long battle for Barum Czech Rally Zlín victory went down to the final stage. In only his second appearance on the classic asphalt rally, rapid Russian driver Lukyanuk took the fight to works ŠKODA ace Kopecký, who was chasing a record-extending fifth win on his home round. Lukyanuk was fastest on five stages, never more than nine seconds behind Kopecký for the duration of their duel and briefly took the lead near the end of the first leg. He went into the deciding stage less than five seconds adrift, but damaged the steering on his Ford and lost 10 minutes. That allowed Kopecký to secure back-to-back victories in Zlín, but he reserved some special words for his rival. “Kudos to Alexey Lukyanuk and Alexey Arnautov, who made things really difficult for us this weekend,” he said.
