Tarabus to make ŠKODA Fabia R5 debut on Barum Czech Rally Zlín

Jaromír Tarabus will be gunning for glory on the next round of the FIA European Rally Championship, Barum Czech Rally Zlín (28-30 August), when he drives a privately-entered ŠKODA Fabia R5 for the first time. Despite rallying for 17 years, it will only be the experienced 38-year old Czech driver’s second ever rally in a turbocharged car, having driven a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX on the same event in 2011. Tarabus does have a record at the Barum Czech Rally Zlín, and won the Colin McRae ERC Flat Out Trophy for his performance there last year. The Fabia R5 will be run by Kresta Racing, and Daniel Trunkát will co-drive. "We look forward to this new Czech car and especially to a new challenge that will be to learn how to use the driveability of the car fully in the shortest possible time,” said Tarabus. “We hope that we will be able to pass successfully some testing kilometres and find a satisfactory set-up and get familiar with the Fabia R5 as much as possible."

Annual ERC Czech birthday bash for Kostka

Tomáš Kostka will contest his home round of the FIA European Rally Championship, Barum Czech Rally Zlín (28-30 August). Kostka, who lives in Zlín, is one of the Czech Republic’s most versatile drivers, having raced in World Series by Renault, the DTM and at the Le Mans 24 Hours and rallied a wide variety of machinery, from a Fiat Abarth Grande Punto S2000 to a Citroën DS3 WRC. Kostka, who will celebrate his 31st birthday at the next round of the ERC, has contested the event every year since 2006. He has twice finished third – in 2014 (in a Ford Fiesta R5) and in 2012 (in a ŠKODA Fabia S2000). He has only contested one rally in 2015, winning Rally Vyškov in a Fiesta RS WRC. “I am still not sure which car I will use on the Barum Rally,” said Kostka. “It should be Ford Fiesta RRC or a car in the R5 class. We will make some tests during the next weeks and then we will decide.”

Q&A with Chris Ingram

Chris Ingram will be heading to the final round of the ERC Junior championship, Barum Czech Rally Zlín, aiming to secure the runners-up spot in the series. With many high-class performances, victory on the SATA Rallye Açores and no crashes, it’s been an excellent year for the Peugeot UK-backed driver, who is out to end the season on a high in his 208 R2. caught up with the British driver.

What has been your ERC Junior highlight so far and why?
“There has been many great moments so far but taking our first win in the Azores was definitely the highlight, especially as it’s such an iconic event in the ERC and one of the most spectacular yet difficult rallies there is. I proved what I can do and was proud to deliver the result to my team and to Peugeot UK. Unfortunately the two events since, in Ypres and Estonia, the luck has definitely been against us as we suffered from two technical problems, but that’s a side of motorsport you have to face sometimes.”

What are the main things you have learnt this year?
“The competition has really been fantastic this season in the ERC Juniors, with drivers pushing each other to the limit. When I push hard that’s when I learn the most and develop my driving. Each rally has brought a new challenge that has helped me be strong psychologically, by being fast but managing to keep the car on the road all year. I've learnt an incredible amount from every rally and stage!”

What will be your strategy and ideal result on the final round?
“It would be brilliant to finish runner-up in the ERC Junior championship, and we are pushing hard for that. The Czech rally will mark one year since I’ve been a Peugeot driver, so I hope to drive a clean rally and get a top result to finish the championship on a high.”
