ERC Q&A: LUKASZ HABAJ
Łukasz Habaj is embarking on a major FIA European Rally Championship campaign in 2017, armed with more experience of the all-action series and a new co-driver with ERC title-winning pedigree. The 41-year-old from Poland talks Daniel Dymurski, car swapping and keeping sharp in the snow.
What’s made you come back to the ERC for 2017?
“The ERC was kind of a natural choice for me after achieving my goals in Poland. I tasted it a bit last year and liked it a lot. It's a whole new experience for me from every perspective. I feel that the ERC is where I can develop myself as a driver and the same applies to the team. The difficulty level is definitely higher than in a national championship.”
How have you prepared over the winter?
“This year we had a great winter time in Poland so I was able to train quite a lot with my old Evo IX. Other than that I didn’t do any special preparation. I did 100 kilometres with my Fiesta on snow and we are planning one more testing day in Azores together with the other crews. This should be enough for finding the right set-up.”
In terms of your programme, what’s the plan for 2017?
“I have a new co-driver for this year, Daniel Dymurski, who won the ERC2 category last year together with Wojciech Chuchała. I am sure his experience will be very helpful, especially on rallies like Azores which I have never participated in. We are planning six events and we’ll probably skip Greece and Cyprus.”
Any car changes in the pipeline for the upcoming season?
“For the first two rallies we will use my old Fiesta R5 and than there will be three months to the next event for me so I will have some time to figure out whether I should finish the season in the same car or maybe change it for something else. I am looking at a couple of options but it is really too early to say what is going to happen.”
Who is supporting you in 2017?
“This year I will get continuous support from eSky Group (esky.com) and we will have one more very important partner, which is Akvo Active, an isotonic sports drink (facebook.com/napojeAKVO/?fref=ts).”
