FIA ERC Junior championship post-event quotes, auto24 Rally Estonia: round 5 of 6

Mattias Adielsson (SWE) Born: 11 May 1991 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Christoffer Bäck (SWE)  8th

“It’s a bad year for us, but that’s part of the game! We rolled four or five times on a very fast section on SS5. We asked the spectators if the wheels were straight, and when they said they were we put it into first gear and set off again. The car is a bit of a mess, but it doesn’t matter. Colin McRae – never give up!”

Emil Bergkvist (SWE) Born: 17 June 1994 Car: Opel Adam R2 Co-driver: Joakim Sjöberg (SWE)  2nd

“I am really happy to finish on the podium here and to become ERC Junior champion – I cannot believe it! The stages are so fast and with many crests, you really have to trust your pace notes. Even Finland is not as fast.”

Diogo Gago (PRT) Born: 7 August 1991 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Jorge Carvahlo (PRT)  7th

“I clearly didn’t have enough experience of this event. The stages were very fast and excellent pace notes are necessary if you want to have the confidence. My rivals were very quick and I wasn’t competitive, but we used the rally to try a variety of set-ups. I felt much more comfortable towards the end. The event also enabled me to gain good experience which will be useful for the future.”

Marijan Griebel (DEU) Born: 18 May 1989 Car: Opel Adam R2 Co-driver: Stefan Clemens (DEU)  6th

“These stage are really good fun to drive, even thought they are so fast and unlike any gravel stages I have done before. I am quite happy with my performance and have improved a lot this weekend. I am very happy to be the first non-Scandinavian and first non-Baltic ERC Junior driver home.”

Chris Ingram (GBR) Born: 7 July 1994 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Gabin Moreau (FRA) DNF

“We had a good pace and were lying fifth, which sounds average, but we were closing in on fourth and having a good run against drivers with much more experience of these type of gravel roads. It’s frustrating that such a big effort by everyone in the team ends because of something as simple as a fuel pump. But at the end of the day, there was nothing we could do about that.”

Mattias Ledin (SWE) Born: 25 August 1988 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Erik Lindqvist (SWE)  5th

“The ERC has been a really good experience for me. We thought it would be big, but there is so many more spectators than I was expecting and the atmosphere is fantastic. We had nothing to gain in scoring points in the ERC, but we were aiming for a top five and we achieved a top five place. Our pace per kilometre is very close.”

Miko Niinemäe (EST) Born: 31 March 1993 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Martin Valter (EST)  3rd

“Our stage times have been good – we have not been taking it easy! We had a problem all rally with a crankshaft sensor. We know what the problem is, but with the wiring loom it was not possible to fix it during the rally.”

Steve Røkland (NOR) Born: 14 June 1992 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Patrik Barth (SWE)  4th

“We have made no mistakes and have been quite consistent throughout this rally. The drivers ahead of us have been having moments, so I’m pleased that we haven’t and still been competitive. The stages are completely unlike anything you see in Norway.”

Ralfs Sirmacis (LVA) Born: 29 May 1994 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Artūrs Šimins (LVA)  1st

“This was our third appearance at Rally Estonia, so our aim was always to win. Because of our team-mate Vasily, who is in hospital, it was more a case of either win or crash, nothing else was going to happen! We have had an engine problem following a heavy landing on SS8, which cost us time, so we are really happy to be able to hold onto our lead until the finish.”

Florin Tincescu (ROU) Born: 8 April 1993 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Sergiu Itu (ROU)  DNF

“After two of three corners of SS2, the first gravel stage, the water pump belt broke and we had to stop. We missed 100 kilometre of experience, but we returned under Rally 2 rules to have fun. Rally Estonia really is a very beautiful rally.”

Aleks Zawada (POL) Born: 31 March 1992 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Cathy Derousseaux (POL)  DNF

“Unfortunately we hit a stone on SS4, that had been pushed out by the cars in front of us. The impact broke a suspension component, which subsequently punched a hole in the sump, causing a loss of oil pressure, which meant we had to stop.”
