Round 2 of 6: Rally Islas Canarias, 4-6 May

JAN ČERNÝ (CZE) Position: DNF (accident)
Petr Černohorský (CZE) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“It was really difficult because on each corner sometimes the surface was slippery, sometimes it was abrasive and you didn’t know what each corner would be like. The team I used in the Azores and the car I used in the Azores were really good but every car is different and it was good to be back with my own team and the car I know much better. We were learning and we will continue like this. [Unfortunately] the barriers did not work much [where we crashed and we went off the road].”

Stefan Kopcyzk (DEU) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“For the second and third last stages I was quite satisfied with the times, they were a lot better than before. But what counts is the points for the championship and third place is not so bad. It could have been a better weekend but I am happy with the podium.”

NIKOLAY GRYAZIN (LVA) Position: Fourth
Yaroslav Federov (RUS) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I learned a lot. I changed the set-up, it’s getting better and I think I know what is needed to work. I want to say thank you to my team because they did good work. I am very happy we finished after some close situations. There stages were very difficult.”

TOMASZ KASPERCZYK (POL) Position: DNF (accident)
Damian Syty (POL) Car: Ford Fiesta R5

“It was really strange for me. I put the brake [on] but nothing happened, I had no pressure and I am not happy because I was expecting a good result here. But I am really, really lucky I don’t fall down because [the drop] was really deep. After a few minutes, when I got out of the car, I see this hill and I was really, really scared. The car was not like new, it was broken, but we are okay, that is the most important thing. This race was very short for us and now we are waiting for the next rally.”

PEPE LÓPEZ (ESP) Position: First
Borja Rozada (ESP) Car: Peugeot 208 T16

“The result is the most important thing and we are very happy to finish as the leader in ERC Junior Under 28, that’s amazing. This was the first Tarmac rally in this car and it was good to be consistent and to be at the finish. The stages were tricky sometimes and we had some problems with the fog and tyre pressures. I was not always happy with the times but the result is very good. We are now in a good position for the rest of the season, so we intend to stay focused, keep up the momentum and carry on fighting.”

SYLVAIN MICHEL (FRA) Position: Second
Co-driver: Jérôme Degout (FRA) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“We had a good start to the rally with the right sensations. We worked on the set-up on Friday to stop the front tyres being destroyed and for me to be less aggressive. But I’m very happy, for us and all the team. It’s a good weekend for us now and for the future.”

Co-driver: Carlos Del Barrio (ESP) Car: Hyundai i20 R5

“It was only my second rally in this great car. We had some problems with the set-up and sometimes it was not always possible to fast. But it’s okay because we finished the rally and thanks to all my team for working very hard to give me the best car. My focus was on the Spanish championship but we will see for the next rally.”

JOSÉ SUÁREZ (ESP) Position: Sixth Won Colin McRae ERC Flat Out Trophy
Cándido Carrera (ESP) Car: Peugeot 208 T16

“It wasn’t the rally we expect but when we had no problem with the car we were the leading ERC Junior Under 28 driver so for us that was good. The car is fast enough to lead, which is a good thing but we did not have the luck on this rally with an electrical problem. I try to be as professional as I can and sometimes I have to take more risks than to be safe and this is good when you want to be spectacular for the people. I want to be as fast as I can and I am happy because we showed our speed. I’ll be working hard for the next event when I will push again.”
