FIA ERC JUNIOR UNDER 28 CHAMPIONSHIP PRE-EVENT QUOTES

Round 2 of 6: Rally Islas Canarias, 4-6 May

JAN ČERNÝ (CZE) Championship position: Seventh
Co-driver: Petr Černohorský (CZE) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I was really sad after Azores where I was close to a very good result. A small mistake destroyed everything. But now we are thinking forward to Rally Islas Canarias, which will be on Tarmac, which is a more suitable surface for me even though it is a completely new race for us. Compared to the Azores, this time I will use my usual ŠKODA Fabia R5 after I hired a car for the Azores. And after a nice fight with Václav Pech on Rallye Šumava Klatovy in Czech Republic last month, I feel stronger and believe that we will be able to fight for the top positions and especially that we bring home the much needed points in the ERC Junior U28 Championship."

MARIJAN GRIEBEL (DEU) Championship position: First
Co-driver: Stefan Kopcyzk (DEU) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I have the start number two but I don’t see this as a burden, but rather more motivation. I have been training hard to improve my fitness since the Azores so I travel to the Canaries with a free head and fully motivated. Clearly it would be helpful to test before such a difficult asphalt rally. But we have to keep an eye on the whole season and, unlike some other drivers, pay close attention to our budget. At the season opener we have shown that it goes also well without testing. My strength seems to be that I can adjust quickly to the car and the conditions. I'd rather concentrate on making the best of what I have than to deal with things that are not possible. In this respect, I was able to learn a lot from my mentor, Armin Kremer, who has accompanied me to Gran Canaria. In addition, my BRR team and Raimund Baumschlager are a great support.”

NIKOLAY GRYAZIN (LVA) Championship position: Third
Co-driver: Yaroslav Federov (RUS) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“I think I like Tarmac more than gravel so we’ll see what we can do. I am always looking to my driving, not to my results because my target is to get faster and faster. If I can work on my speed, then I am happy.”

TOMASZ KASPERCZYK (POL) Championship position: Eighth
Co-driver: Damian Syty (POL) Car: Ford Fiesta R5

“This is our second outing on Rally Islas Canarias so I am looking forward to use my last-year experience to improve my pace here. The stages on the island are stunning and scenic, yet very demanding due to the weather which may change a lot when we enter the mountain sections. What is more, there is literally no time to take breathe when you compete here. We drive from one corner into another and this goes on for many kilometres. This means that there is a lot of work inside a rally car, both for me and for my co-driver. However, this is a very pleasant job, I must admit. We will do our job as good as we can, because our main goal is to increase the number of points in the ERC Junior U28 standings. Together with Damian, we are well motivated, thanks to good result in Rally Swidnicki-Krause. Finishing on the podium boosted our confidence ahead of Rally Islas Canarias and now we are fully focused on upcoming task.”

PEPE LÓPEZ (ESP) Championship position: Fourth
Co-driver: Borja Rozada (ESP) Car: Peugeot 208 T16

“Rally Islas Canarias is our home round and we can't wait to perform in front of the Spanish spectators. It's going to be tough because the level of competition is clearly very high and we are aware that we still have a great deal to learn. We will do our best from start to finish and hopefully come away with a strong result for the team and for our championship chances.”

SYLVAIN MICHEL (FRA) Championship position: N/A
Co-driver: Jérôme Degout (FRA) Car: ŠKODA Fabia R5

“We did not manage to be at the start of the first race in the Azores but it was inconceivable to miss Rally Islas Canarias, the first asphalt event of the season. Even though it is my favourite surface, I still have a lot to learn and the rally will undoubtedly be a major step in my development.”

SURHAYEN PERNÍA (ESP) Championship position: N/A
Co-driver: Carlos Del Barrio (ESP) Car: Hyundai i20 R5

“I am from the same town as Dani Sordo and my family is a motorsport family. My father and brother competed and now my girlfriend, Emma Falcón, and me compete in the ERC on Rally Islas Canarias. I love motorsport, it’s my life. I work in the WRC with SiT Sport with the tracking and the times and I’m the Hyundai Spain driver in the Spanish championship. We try to do one or two more ERC events although we are actually focused on the Spanish championship.”

JOSÉ SUÁREZ (ESP) Championship position: N/A
Co-driver: Cándido Carrera (ESP) Car: Peugeot 208 T16

“I'm really fired up ahead of our home rally which is on asphalt. My goal in the Canary Islands is the same as it is every time I put my helmet on, and that is to be as professional as possible and do everything I can to come away with a top result. The car and the team are both great, so we have all the ingredients for a fun and hopefully successful weekend. The main goal for us will be to add as many points as possible to our score and build our confidence for the rest of the season."
