FIA ERC Junior championship post-event quotes, Barum Czech Rally Zlín: round 6 of 6

Mattias Adielsson (SWE) Born: 11 May 1991 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Christoffer Bäck (SWE) DNF

“The stages here in Czech are very special, tricky but really nice. We retired when we lost a wheel.”

Emil Bergkvist (SWE) Born: 17 June 1994 Car: Opel Adam R2 Co-driver: Joakim Sjöberg (SWE) 1st

“This was a crazy weekend. We were pushing on almost every stage. I can’t wish for a better end to the season than this. I’m so happy! We tried to stay at 95 per cent in the final afternoon. We worked a lot with the set-up and it worked really well.”

Diogo Gago (PRT) Born: 7 August 1991 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Jorge Carvahlo (PRT) DNF

“We had done a first stretch quietly and in the second half of Saturday were coming with a better pace. We caught another car in the stage. He noticed us and then changed course in an unexpected way when we were side-by-side. We ran out of road. This accident has not resulted fortunately in any physical problems for us, but the car eventually fell in a ditch. Our Peugeot 208 R2 was removed from the stage rather late (more than 12 hours after the exit) and it was not possible to return on Sunday for the last stages.”

Marijan Griebel (DEU) Born: 18 May 1989 Car: Opel Adam R2 Co-driver: Stefan Clemens (DEU) 4th

“Everything was going absolutely well but the puncture destroyed all our plans. I think we showed that the Opel Adam is a really great car and it has really great speed. It was going quite well until stage 11. We lost three minutes with a puncture so it wasn’t easy today.”

Chris Ingram (GBR) Born: 7 July 1994 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Gabin Moreau (FRA) DNF

“Our crash was horrific. There was a fifth gear corner with a bad jump and it threw us off line. There was nothing I could do.”

Kristóf Klausz (HUN) Born: 1 June 1996 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver Balázs Kecskeméti (HUN) 7th

“We hit a tree on the final stage but we finished. I didn’t feel well on Saturday but on Sunday I was better. We had to stop for Chris [Ingram’s] accident. The second stage on Sunday was really hard but the third was ok – it was the best for me.”

Łukasz Pieniążek (POL) Born: 19 September 1990 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Jakub Gerber (POL) 5th

“I’m very happy that we finished. We had so many problems today and at the end of yesterday. Despite minor problems with the engine on Saturday we fought on and we were trying to go even faster. But we had a little adventure… On stage 13 we saw a field, luckily without consequences. We can celebrate getting to the finish of a hard rally.”

Steve Røkland (NOR) Born: 14 June 1992 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: James Aldridge (GBR) DNF

“I’m sorry to say that we had to retire from the Barum Rally due problems with our differential. It looks like we will get fourth place in the championship now. It was difficult, we had a problem with the gearbox on Sunday morning. We also hit a big cone on the first stage on Sunday and we bent a steering arm. But we set a good stage time, we were second and were only 2.4s behind Bergkvist.”

Ralfs Sirmacis (LVA) Born: 29 May 1994 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Artūrs Šimins (LVA) 2nd

“I’m happy I can finish in second place and in the overall championship we are in second too. We drove very fast to keep the second position. Before the rally we got a very good set-up so that made things easier for us. We didn’t need to change the set-up on the car in the event. The second day wasn’t so bumpy but I liked the first day more.”

Julius Tannert (DEU) Born: 12 May 1990 Car: Opel Adam R2 Co-driver: Jennifer Thielen (LUX) DNF

“We were in third place. Unfortunately then we hit a kerb and damaged the rear axle. After the service we fixed everything but on the last stage on Saturday the brakes weren’t good. We do not give up but then we were on the way to the first stage on Sunday and we had a technical defect.”

Florin Tincescu (ROU) Born: 8 April 1993 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Sergiu Itu (ROU) DNF

“We were forced to stop on Saturday because of a broken clutch. We super-rallied on Sunday but stopped before the second stage of the day.”

Joachim Wagemans (BEL) Born: 12 September 1994 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Andy Debaeremaeker (BEL) 6th

“We finished the race, which is always a good thing. We learnt a lot. I was a bit sick on Sunday, I had a bit of a fever. To concentrate was hard. I made a mistake on the second stage and I lost 10 or 15 seconds, there was a mistake in the notes. Most important was to make all of the stages and just to finish. Four times this year I had a problem with the car and in Ypres I crashed. So to finish is important.”

Aleks Zawada (POL) Born: 31 March 1992 Car: Peugeot 208 R2 Co-driver: Cathy Derousseaux (POL) 3rd

“It wasn’t too bad, we had our issues. We made sure we got to the end of the rally in a podium place so really good. The Opels are in tip-top shape, it’s a bit sad it’s the end of the season, we want to keep on going. On the first stage on Sunday I had a clutch issue and so we started on the starter motor. We lost a minute there. The set-up was fine though, the car worked very well.”
